Garage Grade Beam
Here is a project designed to improve the look of the inside of a garage. Many garages have a grade beam that the exterior wall sits upon, and it is usually left exposed, as it is a garage. Our customer wanted to see clean lines in his garage, rather than the rough look of exposed concrete and framing, so a fascia of MDF was to be added, to be painted at a later date, along with drywall repairs of some water damage.
First came all the cutting and milling, which was done at home where everything was at my fingertips. Various strips were needed, and a bull-nose edge then routed onto one edge, or both, depending upon the use.
Then began the process of evening out the framing. This was twisted and warped, needing to be smoothed out until it was out of the way.
The fascia pieces were hung, keeping everything level and raised somewhat off the floor to keep it from absorbing any moisture that might gather there.
Once the corners were done, the rest followed suit, every piece custom cut to match the grade of the floor.
A shelf, and trim matching the look of the existing stair landing were added for aesthetics, and nail holes filled and sanded for paint. With none of this touching the floor, the garage is also readied for either a painted floor, or epoxy resin, which would really bring up the look.
Drywall repairs were done as work progressed, repairing a long drywall seam that had been water damaged over the years. It’s hard to see here, which is exactly the point.
This house is raised from the street somewhat, and the custom fit to the line of the floor presents well from the street.
A final touch was to add a piece of plywood under the stairs to clean up the look, and prevent dirt and debris from falling into the storage area below.
All in all, a nice project with satisfying results.
Drywall repairs, carpentry and mill-work. Just some of the things we do.
