Front Sidewalk

With the reshingling efforts taking all my time and effort, building out the business took a back seat. So, what to do?

For years we have wanted a sidewalk going up the front of our lawn, so that’s what was done next, and while it’s not a complicated job, it was labor intensive.

Starting with a bare canvas, the sod was removed, some stored for re-use, an old stump dug out, …

dirt was removed and graded, and crush was added for a solid base. After that, poly, rebar and chairs made the project ready for pouring. Read more “Front Sidewalk” →

Every 20 years or so, ashphalt shingles need to be replaced, and with the weather such that it has been – torrential downfalls – leaks prioritize that work. My home was no exception without a day of rest after completion of the garage before the next downpour and leak… Such is life.

With the shoring materials from the garage project I built a staging to get the shingles onto the roof. It may seem a lot of work, but it was put up in a few hours and made for safe access/egress for the duration of the job. Read more “Reshingling My Roof” →

Roof Repair, Structural Rebuild

What began as a shingling job after the recent torrential downpours, became a resuscitation of an old garage with a sagging roof. Years ago, any hammer swinging Joe could bang together a garage and build their own trusses from scratch. For good reason, the city mandated that future trusses be engineered, as many home built roofs began to look like horses’ saddles after several years. Swinging Joe didn’t clench the nails, use glue, cut angles precisely, or really do a proper job of it at all. The results are below.

Giddy-up!! There is over three inches of sag from end to end, putting a damper on a home sales in the future, so a solution is needed short of a tear-down and rebuild. As the existing trusses aren’t structurally sound, a truss spanning the length of the garage will be built to aid support.

Garage Grade Beam

Here is a project designed to improve the look of the inside of a garage. Many garages have a grade beam that the exterior wall sits upon, and it is usually left exposed, as it is a garage. Our customer wanted to see clean lines in his garage, rather than the rough look of exposed concrete and framing, so a fascia of MDF was to be added, to be painted at a later date, along with drywall repairs of some water damage.

First came all the cutting and milling, which was done at home where everything was at my fingertips. Various strips were needed, and a bull-nose edge then routed onto one edge, or both, depending upon the use. Read more “Garage Grade Beam” →

Refreshed Wooden Fence

If you have an old fence that needs a refresher, this is just the example you might want to see. Here is a years old fence, sun aged and covered in years of dirt, looking for a facelift.

The first step was it got a good power spraying – which on it’s own did a world of good.

A few of the boards were too far gone to paint, so were replaced. Then the painting began, with roller and brush, and the fence absorbed it all like water. The first coat was slow going.

Overhead Garage Door

I know the image above doesn’t look much like a garage door, but that is what I left behind for customer #1!! It’s one thing to start up a service, but it’s another entirely to have a customer trust you to do a job for them, so the little hand made broom tucked into the wheel was the thank-you.

Here is the installation of a new garage door, hardware and all. This included removal and disposal of the old door, and its hardware. The only problem that remained was the heave in the garage floor was bigger than the trim on the bottom of the new door could cover.

The solution was to get a piece of trim that was meant for garage floors with a heave, and what a difference it makes. There’s nothing like a nice seal at the bottom to keep out driving rain, whether your garage is heated or not. Read more “Overhead Garage Door” →
